Typing a friendly name into a wallet to send money only works safely if that name really belongs to one specific person, and if a fake copy of the name can't trick you into paying a stranger. Before this, there was no agreed way to check that a name really is unique on the chain and really is controlled by the person you think, without trusting some company or registrar in the middle.
